NATIONAL BISON RANGE

Wednesday we made our side trip to the National Bison Range about an hour south of Polson, MT.  It took about two hours to do the tour which is mostly on a steep one way dirt road so our round trip was about 4 hours.  It was a pleasant outing and we had good weather.  The road was fun but slow and twisty, either steep up or steep down except for the very last part where the herds were.  We were surprised at the amount of wildlife we saw other than bison.  Not a lot of people/cars.  For most of the drive one other car was a crowd.  Down on the valley floor where the herds were It got really crowded with like about six cars.  Our kind of "crowd"!

HERE ARE SOME HIGHLIGHT PHOTOS.

Beginning of the road.  River in distance is the Flathead river.

Did I mention "Twisty"?

Can you see the bird blocking the road.?

I stayed in the Jeep.

Nothing like a nice dust bath I guess.

This fawn was very new.  Mom was still working on clean up while Junior was eating.

This fawn was a couple days older.

  1. Hi Walt! When you get to Theodore Roosevelt National Park in SW North Dakota, you'll also see bison herds on the roads. Don't recall any birds blocking traffic, though. Do recall herds of wild horses munching their way through our campsite. Beautiful country. Hope you'll be back in September for the reunion!
